It was the best childhood memory I ever had. We did it every year until we were too old. Now, I trick-or-treat with my kids and they do the same thing.

My most vivid Halloween memory was not on Halloween at all — well, not to me, anyway. When I was around 8, I dressed up as Jesus white bedsheet, red tablecloth and gold curtain tie.

My dad had recently purchased a motorcycle that my brothers and I were dying to ride, but since I was the youngest and smallest, I was never given a chance.

On this fateful night, I begged so persistently that my dad finally relented and said he would take me to Hallelujah Night on the motorcycle. Incredibly excited, I hopped on.

Everything was going great, until the newness of it all started to wear thin and my little 8 year-old self got sleepy. My eyes started to close and my head began to droop to one side.

My dad felt my grip loosen, and quickly reached back to hold me with one hand while driving with the other. His frantic attempts to wake me up were useless.

Miraculously, he reached the nearest exit, stopped in a parking lot and tied an extra-long belt he had in his bag around the both of us.

I was fully awake when we reached the front of the church building, and ended up having a great time at the party. My poor, traumatized father, however, never took me on a motorcycle ride again.

We want to know your story. Tell us: What did your favorite childhood Halloween costume look like? David Morgan. Lately, it seems like the most DIY of holidays is losing its edge.

When you don a disguise this year, will it be your own creation? The transformative power of Halloween can serve as a year-round lesson in parenting.

Natalie from HansHolzkopf said 7 years ago. My mom made me a beautiful Gipsy-Girl dress from the old floral shawls when I was about 6: I was soooooo happy:!!!

Now I make for my son Anakin-Skywalker costume from the recycling fabric:. Dana from BuddhaCatCreations said 7 years ago. I made a 'Statue of Liberty' costume for my oldest daughter when she was 4?

It was made from a table cloth and a Burger King crown. I wrapped tin foil around a flashlight for the 'torch'. When my twins were 10?

I bought the Queen Amidala costume, but made the Jedi costume complete with my old Frye boots! The next year, I made my son's Harry Potter costume, and he won first place!

Marilyn from beachseacrafts said 7 years ago. Some fun memories; I made all my childrens costumes while growing up. One year I took a box, paints and masking tape and made a rubiks cube.

Faced painted colored diamonds on the face and red stockings. Imagination can go a long way and very inexpensive.

Happy Halloween! Way back, in the North of England 60's, Halloween was a small, neighbourly affair. Our costumes were not fantastic or fanciful - we were restricted to ghouls or witches only.

There were no tricks or treats, in fact, we had never heard of the term and neither had we ever set eyes on a pumpkin. Our lanterns were turnips or rutabagas.

They were half the size of pumpkins and hard as rock. With my mum's long black skirt tied at my skinny waist with a piece of string and a black turtle neck pulled over my head on which the pointiest cardboard witches hat in the world, was placed, I was ready.

Finally, with green, food-coloured face cream smeared on my face and with my hand firmly set in my white sheet clad brother's, we ventured out.

Half an hour later we'd be back - just a few pennies richer. No sweets, no peanuts, no popcorn balls. Just a few oohs and aahs ringing in our ears!

I make all the costumes from my daughters, trying always to recycled something that I have that can be used! Lynelle Miliate-Ha from FalconandFinch said 7 years ago.

My mother made me too many excellent costumes to favor just one - Cleopatra she even wrapped wire into snake jewelry and dyed my blond hair black!

My mother is very detail oriented, Raggedy Ann, an evil Witch, a Carebear, etc. But she did make a costume for my brother that was so awesome and unique, it still stands out in memory.

She cut a big laundry detergent box down until it would ride on my brothers shoulders, and formed the top of it into a bloody looking stump - there were even wet looking red tubes sticking out, like veins.

My brother peeked out of the cape that went around the neck of this "Headless Horseman" costume. It was the talk of all the kids in the neighborhood!

Caroline from AnchorRoad said 7 years ago. In , my mother made all 8 of us kids colonial costumes for the Bicentennial year.

We won the group costume contest at the fair that year. The best part? We still have them and many others. My mother was a whiz on the sewing machine and really enjoyed making us handmade costumes.

Jess from volkerwandering said 7 years ago. My mother made the most amazing wolf costume for me one year, but I think my favorite halloween memory is when she made "Little House on the Prairie" costumes, one for her and one for me.

Love Halloween and the kid it brings out in most of us! Jessie Friedman from HappyWhoos said 7 years ago. When I was 8 years old my shy mother threw her first and only party in general Halloween party for me.

All the kids in the building and my cousins were there. There were lots of brownies and candies. Cute Halloween decorations.

I was dressed like a pirate girl. For once, this awkward and shy little girl felt like a popular kid that night. JoyceAlice from JoyceAlice2 said 7 years ago.

This was in the 60s. What a difference in Halloweens! Hialeah Halloweens were filled with hordes of little goblins, witches, ghosts shouting and laughing in the dark, lugging heavy brown grocery bags or plastic orange pumpkins full of candy around the neighborhood.

On Kodiak, it was VERY cold and my mom tried to dissuade us from going trick-or-treating but of course with no success.

We dressed up, but our costumes were covered with our winter coats, hats, scarves, and mittens. But we had our brown grocery bags! Needless to say, the neighbors what few there were were very surprised to see us, and sadly, we did not haul in much candy Elizabeth Amy Forzano from LizzyLizano said 7 years ago.

My top three were 1- a strawberry costume that I remember was passed down each year starting with my oldest brother then three years later it was my turn!

My mom made me several Halloween costumes, but the Raggedy Ann was the best. She was so good at sewing. She made my kids first costumes when they were little, two little clown outfits that were adorable.

I miss her so much!! I started making costumes for my kids after she passed away and that has been such fun I'm still making costumes So many times I've wished Mom was still here to ask how to sew something difficult.

Leasa from LeasaDesigns said 7 years ago. We had just learned how to sew jr high and made them. Need to find a photo??? Good times!

Other than that I would go in my dads closet and be a "bum" in his old clothes! Not to great to think about doing that now I was able to dress up in some of my mother's childhood costumes from the s: so much satin, crinoline, and lovingly handsewn pom pons.

Jan Masterson from modelarose said 7 years ago. My mom was probably too busy taking care of a household of 9 to make costumes.

Usually my brothers were "bums. Bums back then were the zombies of today. Torn shirts, old pants, black shoe polish for a beard.

I don't think my mom was too enamored with Halloween with all the serious razor blade stories circulating at the time.

My brothers might cover a 5 mile radius around our house and come home when the pillowcases they used for bags were too heavy to carry. The only Halloween costume I can remember wearing was in 7th grade--short black skirt, black fishnet stockings that I bought at Woolworth's for 99 cents and big mirrored disco ball earrings.

Orange top. My girl scout leader who was my best friend's mother had a party at her house. I'm pretty sure she hated me after that. Heather McGuire from FauldsForge said 7 years ago.

My mom was notorious for making bizarre homemade costumes. One year she stuffed several pairs of tights with kleenex and safety pinned them to my winter coat it was Ontario.

I was oblivious and absolutely delighted with my costume, especially the scary web she penciled onto my face with her eyeliner!

From the casual cruise on a calm lake to adrenaline fueled wave surfing. Hearing their stories, seeing the fish they caught and the ear-to-ear smiles are what inspired me.

I grew up on a small New England lake, where I spent countless hours fishing. Besides hearing the stories and seeing the fun times, the biggest appeal of SUP fishing is its simplicity.

All you need is a board, a paddle and a fishing rod. These days, manufacturers make fishing-specific boards that make fishing from an SUP easier.

The most important thing is to find a board you can comfortably paddle without falling in. My general rule is a board over 30 inches wide and longer than 10 feet.

It will have the stability to stand and fish, while remaining portable. Like any outdoor activity, and probably more so, weather is crucial.

With an SUP, calm days are definitely better. Wind and rough conditions make it challenging, which eliminates the fun factor.

Smaller bodies of water are a great place to start, as they are more protected from wind and do not have a lot of boat traffic.

For these reasons, I prefer freshwater lakes. But a little experience on a board opens up a whole world of inshore action on saltwater.

An SUP is a great, elevated platform to fish from during a calm day along the mangroves or up in the backwaters. I started SUP fishing It limited my catch, but having just one option allows you to enjoy time on the water without fussing with gear.

Again, experience will guide preferences, but starting simple can save a lot of headaches. Of course the safety rules of SUP still apply. I really enjoy bass fishing, but some of my most fun days were with my nephews catching perch.

Other people seek out trout in rivers and saltwater fish like snook, seatrout and redfish. If it can be caught from a boat, it can be caught from atop an SUP.

Head out on the water, take a few casts and see what you think. If it develops into a passion, you might find yourself paddling a board that resembles a fully rigged fishing skiff.

As a fly fishing guide, I have spent a lot of time in exotic places and have seen a plethora of different fisheries.

However, nothing even comes close to the consistency of the fishery we have here in Florida. Long story short, I love Florida, especially the Treasure Coast.

Our neighbor, George Sawley, also happens to build one of the highest. I got to chase cobia that were following huge manta rays. I ended up landing a nice one on a popper off the back of a ray.

This was an amazing experience! A few days later, I had a client, Todd from California, in my boat. We were chasing big jack crevalle along the beaches when a blacktip shark showed up.

Todd landed him on a new fly pattern Capt. Michael Mauri with a pretty cobia that was I picked up at the Atlanta trailing huge manta rays when it ate a popper.

Fly Fishing Show last month. As soon as that fish took the fly, it took off and made several jumps through a long battle.

The aggression and power when this shark took the fly was mind blowing. Catching big jack crevalle on popper is one of my all-time favorite things to do in the spring.

The number and size of these fish is very impressive. It reminds me of my days fishing for giant trevally in the Maldives. In my opinion, there is little difference in these two species.

Recently, my German friend Giovanni headed out with me in search of these giant jacks. I slowly got the boat in position to set him up for the first cast.

The battle was hard and brutal even for a weight rod. Giovanni landed two more before we headed home out of pure exhaustion.

What a great day! If you live on the Treasure Coast or anywhere in Florida and you fish, consider yourself lucky. For more info about Mauri Fly Fishing, contact Capt.

Virtually all our fishing is done on shallow flats. That keeps our sea grass safe, which brings in a lot of smaller baits that lure bigger predators.

I have a STL Bluewave flats boat that clears 8 inches. Grab some shrimp or cut bait and you should have no trouble hooking up.

In terms of artificials, twitchbaits really excel in this area. According to Brady, most places will have 7 inches of sea grass on the bottom, then another 7 inches of water to the surface.

Work a suspending twitchbait just above the tops of the weeds and you are going to score. Retrieve it with a couple of short, sharp twitches followed by a pause.

Brady recommends Good Times Marina www. More than registered anglers showed up on the ice Saturday, Feb.

It hardly seems worth it, except to the lucky anglers who managed to bag a sturgeon. The first four sturgeon harvested were males ranging from 52 to 60 inches, and 25 to 47 pounds.

The final two fish were females ranging from 61 to 72 inches long, and 54 to 80 pounds. A harvested 56inch male originally was captured in the spring spawning run.

A inch male had been captured and tagged during the , and spawning runs. The largest fish, a inch female, had been captured and tagged during the , and spawning runs in the Black River.

Every fish swimming in coastal waters eats shrimp. To target the different species of fish, choose different types of locations and techniques for each fish.

For redfish in the backcountry stick mainly to shallow water flats, shorelines, drop off edges, and oyster bars. For seatrout go to deeper drop offs and points with a current break.

If you are looking for snook, sheepshead, and snapper remember they hang around structure like docks, bridges and jetties. The jack crevalle, bluefish, and ladyfish like open water with bait and a flowing current.

Seatrout also spread over the grass and off the edges. Throw artificials like DOA and Gulp shrimp, or other soft plastics to match the hatch.

Fish free lined shrimp, soft plastic imitation or fly right into the action. It does not last long, after the sun is up a bit, the action will slow on the surface, then time to go deeper with your baits.

With the spring run of bait fish also still in the area such as glass minnows, pilchards, and mullet, keep an open mind and try different baits and lures.

With the warming water temperatures of spring, dock light fishing will be getting good again. A free lined shrimp drifted right through the circle of light is the go to bait,.

Expect to find seatrout, snook, jacks, blues, ladyfish, or a surprise catch. The Ponce Inlet jetties can be very fishy in the spring.

Flounder are one of the main attractions on the New Smyrna side, the flat fish have been deep offshore during winter, Tom from Michigan caught a spawning on the bottom of the ocean, Edgewater Backcountry with they return to inshore waters with many Capt Michael Savedow stopping to feed at the jetty rocks.

Fish as close to the rocks as possible, best baits are lip hooked small size live finger mullet and mud minnows, with live shrimp and jigs second choice.

Black drum, redfish, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, pompano, and whiting are also possible catches on shrimp around the rocks. Jack crevalle, blues, and spanish mackerel can be great fun on Gotcha lures and small silver spoons worked fast off the jetty during times of clear ocean water especially at high tide.

April will be the prime month for chances at near shore ocean cobia, finding the manta rays will give a chance at sight casting with a large jig, bucktail or swim bait, mid-day from 10 AM to 2 PM on a sunny day with calm seas is the ticket to success.

Come see our new and improved store. My favorite month for fishing tarpon has finally arrived!! If there is one thing you take from me today You can find these prehistoric looking beasts just about anywhere this time of year.

Keep your eyes peeled for schools rolling in the open waters of the intercoastal. Free line a live mullet or greenie if you can find some and wait for the aerial assault to ensue.

The smaller the better in the back waters. With tarpon usually you get the nice sized jack crevalles. I understand they are not the greatest eating fish, but how can you turn down a tug of war for the ages?!!

Snook are in full swing, with your best chances being near bridges or funnel points where the bait fish are forced to travel through.

As the temperatures continue to climb, you will want to be on the water as early as possible. The stifling heat we are all too familiar with is sure to put the fishing off until those temps start to fall in the evening.

Redfish will be active in the early morning hours, especially with a lower tide. The bigger gator trout are much more active this time of year as well.

You will have to find some good moving water for your best chances for landing a big gator trout. Until next time The combination of the last of the cold fronts and the rising water temperatures, should really turn on the flats.

Although we have had some winds pushing through you will find tails in this stirred up water. Some of my best days in Mosquito Lagoon were spent just this past week catching redfish and trout in my Pelican Kayak and Skimmer Skiff.

This lady angler goes from kayak to Contender and everything in between. Most of these areas are super shallow grass flats.

For me, I have to trust my equipment, and that means I want the best. You will find me most days out in the lagoon with my Pelican Kayak or polling around in my Skimmer Skiff.

Right now, the three main species you will hook up to in the Lagoon are redfish, trout and black drum. You can find those larger fish in the shallow waters and large expansive grass flats, compared to your smaller species will be found around mangroves, bends, islands, canals and dropoffs.

Right now the Trout bite is on fire! With the right baits and techniques, it will certainly make for a happy angler.

As you all know, I love my artificials. Topwaters, like the Heddon Spook or Spook Jr. If you have been following me for a while, you know my favorites are D.

If you want to keep your trip simple and target multiple species I recommend the basic paddle tail jig pearl mullet on a weedless hook.

It is my go to for landing redfish, snook, tarpon, trout, black Drum and even flounder. Mullet are still a little scarce at the moment, however the mud minnows should be plentiful.

The most fundamental rule is to fish brightly colored baits in dingy or muddy water and light, subtle colors in clearwater. Know how to work your lure, that can be more crucial than the color you use Work your bait in an upward twitch and pause in between allowing it to hit the bottom when typically this will be when you get your strike If you are in an open flat, cast towards those light colored patches and sandy holes.

The fish will hang around the edges. Again, those holes are considered structure on these wide open flats Double your chances of success on the water and fish the tides when they coming in or going out.

I prefer to fish the last hour of incoming and first hour of outgoing. Anglers will also be able to sight cast for free swimming Cobia and hit up that bottom for triggerfish and snappers.

Some days producing double digit releases with a lot of action. Really some of the best days I have had in a few years.

Good to see the numbers coming back for sure. Mahi will start their annual migration up the coast and our Mahi fishing will only be getting better.

I always have a mix of mono and wire rigs in case we run across that lucky wahoo or kingfish in the spread as well. Also, chuggers and smaller skirts of all colors tend to get lots of bites.

This is likely the least technical fishing we get throughout the year since Mahi by nature are extremely aggressive feeders and you typically get a lot of shots.

Trolling around knots and a few baits dragging behind the boat is all you usually need for a successful day. Wahoo fishing should start to settle down towards the end of the month, but with the later than average weather this season the fish could hold for a bit longer than usual.

Had a few days with big. As soon as the weather breaks it time to take the hike out in search of Yellowfin Tunas.

The tunas see better than a lot of species and tend to get leader shy on days. Shane Ryan Back to Blue Outdoors.

We often take these wonderful machines for granted, and expect them to magically turn on whenever we need them. Just like all other items on your boat, motor, or trailer, the electronics need regular care and maintenance as well.

After each trip we highly recommend cleaning all displays and buttons with a mild cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Also, we always recommend covering or removing your electronics after use.

If it is a bracket mounted device, they are usually very easy to remove and store indoors and away from the harsh environment. If they are flush mounted electronics, every company out there provides covers for their displays, if you have lost yours, get in to Diamond Motors to order a new one right away!

Lastly, when if comes to the connections we recommend cleaning and using dielectric grease once a month for high usage boats, and at lease every other month for low usage boats.

Corrosion is the enemy! Here are several simple tips for extending the life of your bearings, springs, tires, and more. One, as simple as it sounds you must hose off any part of the trailer that touched the water or may have been sprayed with water.

Number two, your trailer lights. Once a month we recommend spraying your plugs on both the trailer and your truck with an anti-corrosion spray.

A third tip also seems simple, but can be often neglected and that is your brake reservoir if your trailer is equipped with them. Always check the fluid levels in the reservoir as that is an easy way to make sure you will have the stopping power when it counts.

Tip number four is tire pressure. Check the pressure when the boat is on the trailer and fill up accordingly. Lastly one thing we all know we have to do, but often gets forgotten is greasing your wheel bearings.

Every month or other month, make sure you give your bearings a good greasing. Most trailer manufacturers make this very simple. A quick shot or two with a grease gun will make sure your are properly lubricated.

If I ever questioned why we were turning the lights on when we were clearly going to be running in daylight the entire trip, he would drone on about how important daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance routines were and he was right.

Then he would go on and on about how you should run the electric current through the wires and leave the lights on for a while to help keep the moisture out of the lens housing.

I remember thinking he was spending more time maintaining these darn lights than the time it would take to just change a bulb now and again.

But he said it was important, so I did it, every single time. In fact, I still do it to this day, and I rarely have to change a bulb. As I got older, and more of Gramps wisdom wore off on me, I watched his maintenance routines closely.

I watched my Grandfather cultivate and maintain incredible relationships with his friends and fishing buddies. He would have a small piece of paper with all their names on it.

Gramps would sit at the kitchen table over the course of the week and call all of them. Every single person, every single week.

They would talk about fishing trips past, and fishing trips to come. They were all flawed, as was Gramps, as we all are.

He ran that current through his relationships every time he called someone. Although I was his grandson, I was on that list too, and I was always happy to take that call.

I loved all of those guys, and they taught me more about life and friendship than 1, books could have. Their friendship shined bright until the very end.

On sunny days when I am fishing, I like to pretend its Gramps and his bulbs shining down on me. Turn your navigation lights on, and run them for at least 30 minutes, every single time you use your boat.

You will have to change bulbs less often, and you will hopefully notice a faulty bulb during the day, and not at night when you really need it 2.

Call your friends and call your family. Central Floridas largest selection of kayaks! Ridgewood Ave S. Daytona, FL p Top water lures such as the Mirror lure Top Dog and the Rapala Skitter walk early in the morning working the banks will generate plenty of action.

The black drum should in the river and basin using frozen or live shrimp will do the job. If march gives us warm weather, we should see an influx of Tarpon in April as well.

I find the Tarpon bite early and late in the day using live mullet and blue crabs. Last year in April we had 40 inch plus blue fish in the basin!

There was a cold spring up North and I believe that was the reason we had such big blues, we will have to wait and see if they show up again this year.

As always the reds should be bending our rods often, target all your usual haunts, and you should be greeting with some spotted tail delights! Best Spanish omelette on the planet!

And great service too. Recommend highly. Johns River. Not only is the weather great but fishing is good too. We are winding down on our speck Crappie season but just beginning our Bluegill and shell cracker season.

The best method for catching these fish is to use live crickets fished under a small bobber pitching them against the shoreline cover or tree tops.

Depending on the moon phase you can use live worms fished on Jack Martin from Concord, GA showing the bottom of shell beds. You can a beautiful bass he caught while guided also pitch beetle spins near cover by Capt.

The limit on bluegill and shell cracker is 50 per person. This is an exciting month for bass fishing; we hope to see lots of schooling bass. In the early mornings look for pods of threadfin shad to hit the top of the water, this is a great time to use your favorite top water lures and jerk baits.

Spinner baits will also work if you are using artificial. The best live bait will be the threadfin shad or small wild river shiners.

If the action slows down in the afternoon, try plastic worms in and around lily pads and shoreline cover.

The sizes his shrimping season is one for the history are jumbo. A topless photo scandal that clouded Richmond's AFL premiership celebrations has taken another turn with police saying they are no longer investigating the matter at the request of the woman pictured.

The degree of difficulty extreme cold temperatures add to fishing is what keeps most people from trying ice fishing. While there is a ton of gear designed to make ice fishing easier, core concepts, such as efficiency and mobility go a long way to make ice fishing easy enough for even the most warm blooded people.

When you strengthen your core muscles with exercise, you train the rest of your The same can be said for ice fishing. Exercising core concepts on a regular basis not only improves technique and lure control, but ice fishing actually becomes easier.

The hottest new lures and trending techniques might catch a few fish, but they do little to improve your ability as an angler, especially when everything is frozen.

Efficiency is arguably the foundation of any core. A highly efficient ice angler accomplishes more tasks in a shorter amount of time, and therefore catches more fish.

Being efficient means eliminating unnecessary steps. Fewer steps means more time fishing, and more time fishing means more fish caught.

Every second you spend with your line out of the water is time spent not catching fish. Efficiency begins off the ice.

There are many things you can do before you leave your house that will make you more efficient. Rigging multiple rods with different lures before you leave your house will also reduce steps on the ice.

Then you can cycle through pre-rigged rods rather than tie new jigs in the cold, wind or snow. Then when you want to move you have less equipment to put away.

Sometimes we are so. By the time we decide to move there is gear all over the place, which makes moving harder.

The little things add up. Just as backpackers try to shave ounces off their packs to make hiking easier, successful ice anglers are always trying to shave off unnecessary tasks to make fishing easier.

The equipment you use also contributes to your efficiency. A Vexilar sonar flasher removes a lot of the guesswork. Figuring out if there are fish under you and their depth could take hours without a flasher.

A sonar flasher is easy to use. It will instantly show you the entire water column including the bottom, your jig, and anything else that shows up under you, such as a fish.

All in real time! Clam Outdoors makes a number of items specifically designed to make certain tasks easier on the ice. The simple lowcost products often make a big difference.

The Clam Can allows you to carry bait in your pocket. Rod Slicks keep ice rods from getting tangled, and Fish Trap shelters get you out of the cold quickly and allow you to move around easier.

The parts all have a sum that equals success. Mobility is another important core element of ice fishing.

Mobility allows you to cover more water, which allows you to put your lure in front of more fish. Think of ice fishing the same way you do when open water fishing.

We rarely head out onto the water and cast in the same spot over and over again. Ice fishing is no different. Every hole you drill is a cast.

Core concepts that make ice fishing easier also make it more fun. Establish a routine and it will become second nature.

By constantly thinking of ways to strengthen your core, you make ice fishing easier. Before you know it, you will be catching more fish than ever before.

It was ramp-to-reef in minutes for the five of us, Capt. During his 84 years, Joe had never battled a sailfish. Unfortunately, any hope of doing so on the reef was quickly trammeled by a school of ravenous rainbow runners that pillaged our lively baits at an astonishing rate.

A relative of the greater amberjack, rainbows are feisty on hook and line, but offered no food value for the men of this vainglorious crew. We decided to run farther offshore into deeper water to hunt the harlequin green and yellow denizens of the deep—dolphin!

Sharks act as a regulatory body in these instances through their mere presence. Just by having a shark around, fish and other animals are forced to expand their hunting or grazing grounds and seek out food over larger areas, where their impact will be less dramatic.

Sharks play such an integral role to the health of marine ecosystems that studies have found a decline in their populations results in a correlating decline of many commercially significant fish species, including those, like tuna, that are a favorite on our dinner plates.

Without sharks in our local waters, we would not be able to enjoy the wide variety of fish species and marine animals that we take for granted.

As scuba divers and nature enthusiasts, we spend more time exerting yourself and stressing the animal. Using non-stainless circle hooks helps lower the longevity of the hook rely on this keystone species to help hold in place the precious balance of underwater, which is beneficial to hammerheads and other species that life that allows our coral reef systems to thrive.

Sharks are an easy scapegoat, portrayed by films and most media as are particularly susceptible to exhaustion during catch and release.

Helping preserve shark populations is one step towards ensuring aggressive predators. In reality, sharks play an important role policing and that the activities and ecosystems we enjoy today remain healthy for even strengthening the populations of their prey.

Sharks are opportunistic predators that feed on old, weakened or generations to come. This in turn ensures that only the healthiest members of a fish population reproduce, overall strengthening a species gene pool.

The mackerel have been everywhere from on the traditional trolling grounds to all the wrecks and bait piles. Trolling with large lipped diving plugs or planer and spoon combination is a great way to find the fish.

Once you find them, you can throw 1oz white jigs on a short piece of 5 wire, jigging and reeling as fast as you can.

This can be a lot of fun right now and requires no live bait and the fish can be easy to locate. Remember that if you see commercial boats trolling an area that there are fish around but be respectful and keep a safe distance.

Also something to think about mid February are permit, usually the first fish to show up are big. A good place to start are the wrecks and towers to the south of Marco Island, be prepared for a cobia encounter also as the fish will start migrating north towards the end of the month.

The Full moon this February falls on the 11th and the new moon is on the 26th. February is another month with extreme tides around the full and new moon.

We will have some extreme low tides the mornings of the 9th — 13th and the 24th — 28th. Again, be sure to do your tide chart research if fishing those days.

You may want to avoid fishing during some of these extreme negative low tides. As I mention each winter, an east wind accompanied with cold temperatures, will make the tides a lot lower and last longer than a tide chart prediction shows.

Looking at the moon phases, tides, and the Solunar calendar, I like what I see for peak bite days on the on the 9th — 13th and the 24th — 28th. Since our climate is stagnant, our ecosystems are extremely sensitive to the slightest temperature adjustment. The change in climate can truly effect what fish are present and what they are biting so, although we may not feel much a difference, there is a clear seasonality for fishing in Southwest Florida.

As the water reaches degrees, the most popular fish in the Gulf of Mexico move closer to shore, including the red grouper, lane snapper, and the mutton snapper.

The lane snapper and white grunt, are generally an easy target year-round, however the lanes tend to be more accessible in the warmer months.

Depending on the frequency or severity of the cold fronts, warm-water fish may depart sooner. Closer to October or November, there is an influx of two prized fish, including mangrove or grey snapper and gag grouper.

Among Charter Captains these fish usually evoke bragging rights. Also, during this time you will also see an influx of commercial boats going out for king mackerel, a fun to catch and exhilarating workout.

You can still find majority of all the fish previously listed, however due to the climate, the fish selection is limited.

The warm-water fish have moved and the cold-water fish are moving in. During this time, the fishing experience is interesting because many fish that are normally found in large groups but smaller in size, will stay despite the temperature changes such as the lane snapper that are usually inches.

The fish that you catch during this time are usually the tougher of the group because they campout year-round through the temperature changes.

For example, this past May was the most productive month of fishing on our fishing trips and charters.

In addition, this is when stone crab season ends, which is when you can usually catch several triple tails who generally hideout under the buoys of crab pots.

This very finicky but intelligent fish is one to gloat about if you can pull one over the gunnels. In all, Southwest Florida has varying fishing seasons year-round.

We may not feel a drastic change during the seasons but the smallest changes in temperature will spark new fish to venture into our waters. Their captains and crew are topnotch and truly care about the anglers onboard.

With the warmer temps the bite has been better than expected and the bait has still been abundant. The water has been around 70 degrees and should hang around that mark with the 80 degree days we have had.

The bite will be better closer to high tide and we can expect to see many more low winter tides, so pay close attention to those tide charts. I want to talk a bit about kayak safety this month as spring is quickly approaching and much more of you will be on the water.

Tell someone your paddle plan, which includes: where you are going, what you will be doing, how long you expect to be gone and how many people are in your party.

Then stick to your plan. Beware of off-shore winds that make it difficult to return to shore. I see this happen all the time and most people are lucky enough to make it back to shore but not without getting a solid upper body workout.

Stay hydrated, making sure you always bring plenty of water and food. When paddling in a new area, check with the locals regarding currents, shoreline conditions and weather patterns.

Coast Guard regulations require that all kayaks have a life jacket on board. Wearing your life jacket will help keep your head above water and add insulation to your body, keeping you warmer in cold water.

There are great PFDs designed specifically for paddlers. Buy one that fits well, and always wear it while you paddle.

Abiding by these rules will help to make your kayak adventure safer and fun. Paddle Naples offers guided kayaking and paddleboarding tours, rentals, as well as fishing tours.

The redfish bite should pick up on the flats and around the mangroves. In addition, trout should be hot to bite and can be caught by drifting over the grass flats using popping corks.

Snook will be harder to catch in the winter but not unattainable. Many of the larger snook will move up river so looking in more brackish areas will prove successful.

A wintertime favorite, sheepshead, have already started to arrive in numbers and will continue to provide action all winter long.

I hope all had a great start to the New Year and I hope our weather in February is nice and mild with no freezes this year.

I will have to first apologize for the February article because it is not my favorite fishing month in South West Florida. At the time I am writing this I just do not know what kind of weather we are going to have in February and how it will affect the way we will be fishing.

Please do not shoot the messenger on this piece if I do not get it exactly right I do not have a crystal ball when predicting the unpredictable.

Anyhow here goes nothing. Lake Okeechobee bass fishing, weather permitting, should be seeing a good number of spawning fish on both the new moon and full moon in February.

Even if we have cooler than normal conditions it should not affect this too much. Bass are bass and they will want to make babies this month especially if the weather turns spring like early.

There should be continued success for the crappie fisherman using small jigs or Missouri minnows also called fat head minnows under small corks.

I would expect low water conditions on the lake to be in affect so be very careful running around at high speeds I have seen many lower units and transoms ripped off of boats.

If the lake gets down to extra low levels then the fly fishing in the Rim Canal should get very good and really concentrate some bass and bluegills this should hold true for the river also.

If the weather is warm then small poppers will be great if not you might have to use small wooley buggers or other small weighted flies to get down a little.

I highly suggest any fly you throw to have a weed guard on it. Lake Trafford should still be seeing great success for the crappie anglers and the same type of rigs and bait apply from the previous paragraph.

Trafford Marine should have plenty bait on hand. If we get some warm weather in February the top water bite for bass should get started on the lake.

They will want to move out of cover and to the shallower edges searching for food and building for the spawn so they will be hungry. I like to throw yellow poppers on this lake, not sure why but they seem to work the best for me we have plenty at the shop.

That keeps our sea grass safe, which brings in a lot of smaller baits that lure bigger predators. I have a STL Bluewave flats boat that clears 8 inches.

Tight lines, The Chibbaro Family.
